Youth Programs
 
The Philipstown Recreation Department offers a variety of Youth programs including from cooking, the arts, theatre, dance, sports and movement.

SPRING PROGRAMS

BEADING BONANZA*
Grades K - 6
Learn that there’s more to beads than bracelets (although we’ll make some of those too!).  We’ll make a variety of different projects which may include jewelry, keychains, hair accessories and more.

FAIRYTALE THEATRE*                                                    
Grades 2 - 6 
Ever wanted to see your favorite fairytale brought to life? Why wait when you can do it yourself?  Participants will work together to turn their favorite fairy tales  into their very own theatre script and bring it to life by performing it! The performance will be June 12th at 4:30pm.

NATURE SCOUTS*
Grades K - 6
Step outside and enjoy the world around you! Participants will explore the outdoors.  Activities include hiking, gardening, nature crafts, simple science activities and more.

 SUMMER PROGRAMS

JUNIOR FIRE ACADEMY - 10th Anniversary      
Grades 4th - 8th
Cold Spring Fire Company No. 1 and the Philipstown Recreation Department have teamed up to offer a week-long Fire Academy for Junior Firefighters. The Academy will be open to Town residents only, with the maximum number of children set at 50.  Junior Firefighters are issued uniforms (t-shirts) that must be worn at all times. Topics include fire cause and prevention, fire safety, firefighting equipment and its usage, the importance of teamwork, and physical fitness and marching. This is a free program.

Basketball Skills & Drills                     
                                  
Grades 4th - 8th
Come each week and work on your basketball skills.  Participants will take part in drills focusing on shooting, dribbling, passing and teamwork.  End the night with scrimmages while testing your new skills.  This in an on-going program.

SUMMER CAMP

Come spend your summer with us!  Each week campers will have the opportunity to participate in activities including outdoor games, arts & crafts, cooking, DDR, ping pong, photography, hiking, organized gym activities and science and nature projects. Campers will also be swimming at Highlands Country Club at least twice a week (weather permitting, of course).  All campers will be swim tested the first week they attend the program.  In addition, each week will feature special activities and events related to the themes listed below (Please note: some of these trips have limited space so please be sure to register separately for trips with an asterisk. (No child is required to attend the trips, there will be plenty to do at camp if your child prefers to stay back.)  An updated medical form is required to attend summer camp.

 
TEEN LOUNGE - Traditional camp with a little more freedom for our grades 7 and up campers  Each week brings the opportunity to take part in all the camp activities listed above, as well as the privilege to use the music studio.  Participants also have the option to kick back in the Teen Lounge to watch movies, play cards & video games or just hang out.  Teen Lounge campers may attend all the trips listed below.

Nature Challenge                 
June  25 - 29
Open your eyes to the world around you.   Learn to recognize local plants and animals and explore hiking trails.  Learn some wilderness survival techniques, how to protect the natural world through cool science experiments and create works of art from recycled materials.  All campers may go strawberry picking on Wednesday, June 27th at Lawrence Farms Orchards.
 
Halloween Haven                               
July 2 - 6 (No 7/4)
All the fun of Halloween, all week long.  We’ll have face painting, costume & jack-o-lantern carving contests, spooky stories, ghoulish treats,  mad science tricks, and a trip to the movies on Tuesday, July 3rd for campers in grades 3-up* (1st and 2nd grades will be included if a G rated movie is available)
 
Into the machine                    
July 9 - 13
Ever wish you could play video games in real life?  Then this is the week for you!  Each day we’ll bring some of our favorite digital adventures out of the virtual world into our own.  Let’s see if you can beat the game in a week!  Campers in grades 3-up may take a trip to The Castle Fun Center for an additional $5 on Thursday, July 12th.
 
Ship Rec Cove                    
July 16 - 20
Ahoy, mateys!!! Set sail for adventure and take part in our interactive journey on the high seas. Start by joining a crew and building your team’s pirate ship, then spend the week following Elisha Nelson’s footsteps searching for treasure hidden right here in Philipstown.  Meet a cast of quirky buccaneers who will aid you in your quest to find the missing pieces of the map, have your crewmates walk the plank, take part in our scurviest pirate costume contest, and witness a swashbuckling demonstration before the final ship to ship battle to see which crew rules the seas.  Campers in Grades 3-up may go on a trip to Splashdown Beach for an additional $15 on Wednesday, July 18th.
 
Wizard World                                                                          
July 23 - 27
Join us for another enchanted week and see who’ll win this year’s House Cup.  More “magical” treats, concoctions and experiences await! Try your hand at dueling (read: laser tag) and muggle quidditch, join in the horcrux hunt, test your knowledge of all things magical in our Battle of Wits and once again see which house stays standing at the end of this week’s (water balloon) battle.  Campers in grades 3 & up will go to Magiquest at Fun City at the Palisades Mall on Wednesday, July 25th.
 
Team Spirit                   
July 30 - August 3
Which team will get the gold in our annual competition week? There’s something for everyone- sports competitions, brain teasers and an assortment of wacky events designed to keep everyone laughing and having fun.  The week ends with our awards ceremony, barbecue and dodgeball blast!  Campers in grades 5th & up can go to Yankee Stadium* and watch the Yankees play the Balitimore Orioles for an additional $15 on Wednesday, August 1st.

C.A.M.P. Camp                               
August 6 - 10
(Short for Creative Art & Music Parody Camp), ‘Nuff said.  This is arts camp for those with their tongues in cheek - test your wits at improv games, compose and perform your own parody songs, wow your friends with a  dance routine,  take part in camp-wide works of art, but most of all have fun!  Campers in grades 5 & up can go to Lake Compounce Amusement Park* on Wednesday, August 8th for an additional $15.
 
philipstown Faire    
August 13 - 17
Send the summer out with a celebration!  Each day will bring fair inspired fun, including preparing midway treats, carnival games and some wacky contests leading up to Friday’s grand celebration complete with carnival games and booths, inflatable fun, a summer feast, and of course, year-end dodgeball and the summer’s water balloon battle finale!
